The Piper Colt was developed as the training version of the PA-22 Tri-Pacer, which in-turn was the nosewheel version of the PA-20 pacer; a post-war design that appealled in the 1950's and 60's. Powered by the well-trusted Lycoming O-235, the variant was popular against the Cessna 150, until it was eventually replaced in 1964 by the PA-28 series Cherokee 140.
